David Thomas Mather
Praised for his "liquid vocal gold" (Carduus), baritone David Thomas Mather is a versatile and adaptive vocalist who embraces a wide body of repertoire from the early Baroque to German Lieder to musical theatre, and seeks to draw inspiration from both classical and contemporary style in his performance. As a soloist, David has been featured in masterclasses with early music specialists Joel Frederiksen, Anne Azéma, and Ryan Turner, as well as Broadway icons Laura Bell Bundy, Alice Ripley, Laura Ones, and Marla Mindelle. He has been pleased to work collaboratively with prolific opera composers like Christopher Theofanidis, Mark Adamo, and Bright Sheng, as well as premiere pieces by Grammy-winner Jennifer Higdon, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Jonathan David.
Recent performances include Bach' BWV 106, BWV 56, and Schubert's Winterreise. He also was the 1st place winner of the 2022 Chicago songSLAM Competition, premiering a brand-new art song as both poet and performer. A professional chorister in Boston, David sings primarily as a member of Carduus, an intimate new vocal ensemble that regularly performs at Jordan Hall as an affiliated ensemble through the New England Conservatory. He has given concerts for audiences in North America and Europe performing at venues including the Notre Dame Cathedral and La Madeleine. Recently, he debuted with The Boston Camerata as part of their Dido and Aeneas: An Opera For Distanced Lovers production and Play of Daniel project tour. He has appeared with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Lowell House Opera, the Utah Symphony Chorus, and the Grand Teton Music Festival Chorus. David sings regularly as a section leader and cantor for several churches in the greater Boston area.
Opera credits include the titular role in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (COVID cancelled), Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Le Roi/Le Surintendent in Massenet's Cendrillon, Frank Maurrant in Street Scene, and Friedrich Bhaer in Little Women. Other staged productions include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sister Act, Young Frankenstein, Company, Monty Python's SPAMALOT!, The Addams Family Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Beauty and the Beast. He will perform music from John Eccles' Macbeth with the Henry Purcell Society of Boston as one of the Witches this coming June.
David holds a BM in Vocal Performance with a Minor in Theatre from DePauw University, and a Master of Music degree in Historical Performance, Voice from the Longy School of Bard College. He currently studies with Tyler Duncan.
